After partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, the responsibility of performing all the construction works of central Pakistan was vested in the Public Works Department. Communication and construction work (C & B) is governed by the government of East Pakistan. Later in 1962 (C & B) was divided into two departments and one Public Works Department and the other Roads and Highways Department. The Roads and Highways Department is now running important bridges and culverts development and maintenance activities, including National, Regional and District Roads. Under Roads and Highways Department, there are 21,481 km roads, 4507 bridges, about 13,751 culverts.
